women in wonderland

Photographed by Kira Upin

My photography series, titled Women in Wonderland, explores the societal and historical perceptions of women. In my project, I examine power and limitations of women through fairytales and religion. I portray women through the visualization of stories like Adam and Eve, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel, and religious symbolism. When I printed out some photos from my series, I also sewed through and connected the images via string. As I began my photography series, I based most of my portraits in a more everyday setting, but as the series progressed, my photos became more allegorical and fantastical images.

But are we?

are we really empowered?
